Your guide

Hi, I'm Skylar.

Scientist, teacher, and the person in your student's corner.

Before I taught science and math, I lived it. I earned a master's degree studying climate change, doing research with ice cores and fieldwork in Antarctica and the Peruvian Andes. That work taught me how to break overwhelming problems into clear, manageable steps, which turns out to be exactly what most students need.

I went on to earn a master's in teaching and have spent years working with middle and high schoolers, including at a school built for student-athletes juggling demanding schedules. I know how to meet a busy student where they are, build their confidence, and help the material finally click.

Basecamp is named for a reason. I'm not the summit. Your student is. My job is to be the place they gear up, build skills, and launch from, all the way to the top.

  • M.S. in climate & quaternary sciencePublished research in peer-reviewed journals; fieldwork in Antarctica and the Andes.
  • M.A.T. in educationFormal teacher training with a top-tier teaching assessment score.
  • Years in the classroom and one-on-oneExperience teaching student-athletes and busy students across the Mountain West.
My teaching philosophy

How I help students climb.

I came to teaching from science — years of research, fieldwork, and wrestling with problems that didn't have an answer key. That work taught me something I bring to every session: hard things become possible when you break them into clear, manageable steps. That's the heart of how I tutor.

1I meet every student where they are.

Some arrive confident and ready to go deeper; others arrive convinced they're "just not a math person." Both starting points are completely fine. I don't make assumptions about what a student should already know. We start from where they actually are and build from there.

2I treat confidence as part of the work, not a side effect.

In my experience, what holds students back usually isn't a lack of ability — it's the anxiety that piles up when they feel behind. When the work starts to feel manageable again, students re-engage, and that's when real progress happens.

3I teach for understanding, not just answers.

It's easy to get a student through tonight's homework. It's far more valuable to help them understand why it works, so the next problem, and the one after that, feels familiar. I stay curious right alongside them, because science and math are a lot more engaging when you're exploring, not just memorizing.

4My goal is to make myself unnecessary.

The best outcome isn't a student who needs me forever; it's a student who's built the skills, study habits, and self-belief to stand on their own. I'm here to help them gear up and find their footing — so they can reach the summit themselves.

Science and math tutoring to help every student reach their summit.

Safety & trust

Built on transparency.

Trusting someone with your student's learning is a big deal, and I take that seriously.

Communication always includes you, the parent or guardian, never private channels with your student. Sessions happen in safe, comfortable settings we agree on together, whether that's a public space, your home, or online. Online sessions are only ever recorded with your written okay. And I keep a current background check on hand, which I'm always happy to share.

My goal is for you to feel as confident about the experience as your student does about the math and science. If you ever have a question or concern, my door is always open.

What families say

Trust, earned one student at a time.

I'm building Basecamp the same way I build a student's confidence: steadily, and on real results. As families share their experiences, you'll find their words here.

Your family's experience could be the first story told here.
Early students get my full focus, and my deepest gratitude.
Real words from real families, coming soon.
